Bariatric Surgery Procedures

Destiny Surgery Center is a comfortable and private environment for your bariatric surgery procedure. The following weight loss surgery procedures are performed at our surgery center:

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection (sometimes called vertical sleeve gastrectomy) is a minimally invasive procedure. During this technique 75 – 80% of the stomach volume is permanently removed. This procedure has become very popular because it is less likely to cause complications such as the malabsorption of vitamins and it still allows patients to lose more than 50% of their excess body weight.

The Inverted Gastric Sleeve

The Inverted Gastric Sleeve is an enhancement of the gastric sleeve resection procedure. This procedure requires a crucial second step wherein our surgeons invert the gastric sleeve staple line and then suture the outer covering of the stomach over it. This extra measure provides the stomach with an additional layer of strength resulting in reduced chance of staple line leaks.

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass is the oldest and most popular bariatric surgery procedure in the United States. Most gastric bypass surgeries are now performed laparoscopically and involve only a few small incisions. In this procedure, a small, egg-sized pouch is detached from the stomach and connected to the lower part of the small intestine. After undergoing this procedure, food will flow the small pouch directly on to the lower intestine, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at a meal. Gastric Bypass helps patients to lose 60% - 80% of their excess weight.

Gastric Banding

This minimally invasive, reversible and adjustable procedure can help patients achieve an earlier feeling of fullness and lose weight safely and effectively. Gastric banding typically involves very small incisions and minimal recovery time. Gastric banding helps patients to lose 40% - 50% of their excess weight.

Weight Loss Surgery Revision

Weight Loss Surgery Revision gives a second chance to patients who did not respond with sufficient weight loss to their first surgery. Our surgeons will work closely with you to determine which procedure will be best for your needs.

Pain Management

Effective postoperative pain management is an important part of recovery, speeding healing and reducing complications.

Our multimodal approach includes regional anesthesia. Regional anesthesia has many advantages, including superior pain relief and reduced adverse effects associated with narcotic pain medications. Because of these benefits, we provide a procedure known as transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block to patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

This procedure uses ultrasound guidance to inject a long-acting local anesthetic in the plane just between the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles, numbing the nerves that carry pain signals from the abdomen. By taking advantage of this relatively new therapy, we reduce our patients’ need for narcotic medications while providing the best possible pain management.
